A semi-complete tour of pottery blogs, part 6
This post is a version of my new blogroll which can be found on one of the top tabs on the new site. It was way too big to list in the side bar of the site so I gave it it’s own page. After a lot of work (and a little lot of help), I was able to create thumbnail snapshots of the blogs to break up the very long list and add a little visual interest. The blogroll that is on the top tab is connected to my blog reader, so it updates whenever I add or subtract a blog automatically.
In addition to writing this pottery blog, I also am an avid reader of clay focused blogs written by other ceramic artists. There are more than 100 blogs on my blogroll that I read daily through a blog reader. (I really do read all of these blogs listed!) It can be a bit overwhelming at first, but once you’re caught up, it’s so nice to start your day catching up with potters from around the world.
At the bottom of this list you’ll find directions for connecting this list to your blog reader so you can read them regularly too. Because this list could be endless without some restrictions, I do have some perimeters for the blogs here- they need to be mostly about clay, have original content and are updated semi-regularly. This is not a complete list (I did title this as semi-complete). I “discover” new blogs every week and wonder how I possibly could have missed them before. Let me know if I’m missing anything!

There is no way that I could remember to check in with these blogs on my own, so I use the blog reader, Google Reader, to subscribe to these blogs. Instead of visiting all the sites, the newest posts are compiled into the reader automatically and keeps track of the unread ones, etc… It’s very easy to set up (really…it is!).
If you’re interested in subscribing to my list (above), and you’re using Google Reader, just follow these simple steps.
- Login to Google Reader
- Click on this link and “save file”:http://www.google.com/reader/public/subscriptions/user/15666827403315601321/label/public
- Figure out where the downloaded file is located. (for PC users) Right click on the download and click on “open folder containing.” That will tell you where the downloaded file is located
- Click on “Manage Subscriptions”
- Click on “Import/Export”
- Click on”Browse” and locate the downloaded file.
- Click Upload and then start reading! You’ll be overwhelmed with posts to read at first, but once you get caught up, it’s quite manageable :)
You can always use this as a starting point and add and subtract subscriptions from this list to suit your interests.
And if you’re overwhelmed by the number of posts that appear in your blog reader, you can always “mark all as read” and start reading from that point forward.
Enjoy!

Hi Emily, you are the queen of blogdom, thanks for the link, all the hard work, and information.
Linda, you’re the queen of commenting! Thanks for the kind words and for reading my blog!
hi emily, sorry you’ve lost me on this one, i’m on a mac and the file downloads as .xml – i doubled clicked on it adobe illustrator tries to open it…and i can’t seem to find manage subscriptions on the google reader page, i seem to be alreadty logged in with gmail account, is that right?
of course never give up, never surrender…….
i somehow found this page – http://www.google.com/reader/settings – import export tab and upload the subscription file, just in case anyone else is as confused as me…..thanks emily for all your hard work….
Ang, I’m glad you figured it out! Good news for you and the other Mac users out there… Picasa is now available for Macs! http://picasa.google.com/mac/
Hi Emily
Somehow my pottery blog is not showing up on anyone’ radar!
Which confuses me greatly as links to their blogs have been posted on my site for quite a while ( 2 years or so); in the past have posted short articles i.e. do visit this site (blog name) for the potter/artist is doing a heck of a fine job; and often, as time allows post to the comments sections of potter’s blogs.
Wot’s de scoop?
Hugs
Chae
Hi Chae,
I’m not sure why it’s not showing up. That’s why I asked for some help adding to the list! Actually, I just went to follow the link you provided with your comment, but the link appears to be broken. ( http://www.claygallimaufry.com/ ) I’ll check back again, but let me know if there was a typo or something and I’ll add you in! If you’re slightly technically inclined, check out this post I did on Search Engine Optimization: http://potteryblog.com/2008/08/search-engine-optimization-for-clay-bloggers/
Doing a couple of the tips might help your blog show up in searches. Keep on blogging! Look forward to checking it out when the link’s working. -Emily
hi emily, i know flickr is now avilable straight linked from iphoto, i think i tried picasa but haven’t quiet got it happening yet, must put that on my list. i didn’t know you’d moved from blogger til i saw your new link on a page yesterday… ta ang
Hi Ang, I just “went live” with my new wordpress blog a couple of days ago, so it’s all still pretty new! I’ve been anxious to do it for quite a while, but I lacked some of the technical skill to do the switch so seamlessly. I’ve never used iphoto before since I’m not a Mac user, but I suspect there are a lot of overlap between iphoto and picasa.
We are conditioned, i think, to add a www. before all addresses. The link is http://claygallimaufry.blogspot.com.
But in checking what i wrote, i realize i forgot to add the “blogspot”!!!
Have only had 8 hours sleep in the past 2 days. Bear with me. My mental facilities improve after a good night’s sleep. At least, somewhat . . . .
Hugs
Chae
Amazing, Emily! I am in awe of your prowess! I am going to subscribe so I don’t have to go through my bookmarks each time. (As soon as I get up the gumption to actually concentrate on the instructions.)
Your list of blogs was the first one I found when I was looking for ceramics blogs and all your information helped me start my own. I am having a good time with it even though I had to learn so much more about computers and photography than I thought I would have the patience for. Thanks for the update on Picasa for MACs. I’m fairly happy with IPhoto – but it’s all I know and I think Picasa does more. Do you think the instructions you posted about Picasa would be applicable for MACs?
Hi Emily,
Thanks for all the valuable information! Your blog is a textbook perfect example of a smart, valuable site. I’m relatively new to blogging and am posting once a week about pottery and humor. I do a line of pots called wallyware: hand drawn cartoons depicting the life and times of a dog named Wally. It’s one of those things that’s tough to describe when you are at a party and someone asks what you do for a living. Roughly half of my blog posts are about my work, so include me in your list.
best regards,
Tom
Chae, I got the fixed up link. Thanks! It’ll take a day or two to show up, but it’ll be added. (on Blogroll page)
Barbara, I would guess that Picasa for Mac is very similar (or the same) as Picasa for PC. It’s quite intuitive, so just dive in! Good luck. There is a lot of “on the job” training with this blogging stuff. I’m checking out your blog right now…
Tom, Thanks for pointing out your blog! I hadn’t come across it before. I’ll add it to my list. It might take a couple of days for it to show up on the Blogroll, but it’ll get there. Happy Blogging!
Emily . . . I confess I have been a lurker on your blog for a very long time . . . mostly just taking it in and not really thinking I had anything to offer back. Thank you for all your hard work in this post, but really ALL your posts. You are an inspiration (and an education)! I set my own blog up because of your postings on blogs a while ago. Before you wrote that entry, the task seemed too daunting. So, I am new to this blog stuff but you are such a light helping me (and so many others I am sure) all find my way. Thank you! I wish you all the best in the new year.
Hello Emily;
Thanks for the link and for your blog!
All good things to you in 2009!
Hello Emily,Hope you can include me in your blogrollas I am a sculptor amongst other things, Regards,Judy
“the queen of blogdom” … why I would have to agree with that.. pottery blogdom at least ;)
I just wanted to add my name to the long list of artists who are so thankful for all the hard work you do. You’re so dedicated! I’m not sure when you find the time, but many thanks for all you do for our community!
All the best!
Thanks for the tour of your home and studio… Sweet!
One of my favorite blogs… http://musingaboutmud.blogspot.com/
